If you wish to learn about my professional background and the therapeutic modalities that I use, please continue to read below. If you wish to read about my approach please read the Safe Therapy Space Clinic page.
I am registered as a Clinical Psychologist with the New Zealand Psychologists Board. My clinical psychology training was psychodynamic. I later completed training in Integrative Psychotherapy (focusing on Gestalt and Existential Psychotherapy), and I am a UK Council for Psychotherapy Registered Psychotherapist (UKCP reg.) since 2007.
Over the years, I developed knowledge also in other therapeutic modalities, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Family Therapy. This enables me to work in an integrative manner when formulating with the client their difficulties and to tailor an effective therapeutic approach to my client’s difficulties, wishes and needs. I provide therapy to individuals, families and groups, and supervise clinicians and teams.
I worked in multiple clinical settings, from University Counselling Services to Adult Acute Mental Health Inpatient Units. My most recent role in the public health system over the past nine years is at the Adult Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit at Auckland City Hospital.
In my role at Auckland District Health Board (ADHB), I initiated eight years ago and since then lead a mindfulness project that involves a sustainable implementation of Mindfulness at the Mental Health Services. In 2016 I received the ADHB Allied Health Scientific and Technical Award for the Mental Health Directorate. The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme that I facilitate for staff was a Finalist in the ADHB Health Excellence Awards.
I am a Certified Teacher and approved supervisor of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).
I am also the Co-Director of the Mindfulness Training Institute: Australia & New Zealand (MTI). This internationally recognised not-for-profit organisation trains and certifies MBSR and MBCT teachers in our part of the world (www.mtia.org.au).
Most importantly in my life, I am the father of a wonderful 15-year-old teenage girl.
